Bitcoin Posts Third-Best August as ETF Inflows Surge

Bitcoin is characterised by its seasonal downturns during the summer months. However, August presented a distinct scenario. In fact, the leading cryptocurrency experienced its third most successful August on record. As noted on Tuesday by Bitwise’s European Head of Research, André Dragosch, bitcoin achieved returns of 25% last month. “No ‘summer lull’ so far,” Dragosch wrote on X, emphasising that the only superior Augusts for the coin occurred in 2017, yielding returns of nearly 66%, and in 2013, with returns close to 31%. Numerous analyses indicate that the period from June to September tends to exhibit lower average returns compared to other months of the year.

Throughout most of June and July, bitcoin exhibited notably low volatility, with the coin trading below $65,000. However, this situation shifted in mid-August when the U.S. Treasury Department announced plans to more than double the scale of its government debt repurchases, responding to the pressures in fixed income markets and the surge in yields to levels not observed in nearly two decades. Lower long-term yields diminish the opportunity cost associated with holding non-yielding assets such as bitcoin and gold, thereby generally fostering a risk-on sentiment.

Investors surged into bitcoin as a consequence. Positive developments emerged as President Donald Trump encouraged lawmakers to finalise the long-anticipated crypto Clarity Act. The digital asset industry has persistently advocated for definitive guidelines regarding the regulatory treatment of bitcoin, stablecoins, and other cryptocurrencies. Despite a postponement in the voting process regarding the legislation, Trump characterised the draft as “very powerful.” The president made the comments following a meeting with prominent figures and CEOs from the cryptocurrency sector.

In August, investors returned to ETFs with notable enthusiasm, allocating over $2.8 billion to these investment vehicles — the highest inflow since October, coinciding with the cryptocurrency reaching a new all-time high. Bitcoin in August experienced its most significant performance in three years, with an increase of nearly 20% over the past month. The asset peaked at $81,281 last week before experiencing a decline on Friday. Bitcoin’s price recently stood at $76,883, reflecting a decline of nearly 3% over a 24-hour period.
