JPMorgan Chase’s asset management division has indicated that although bitcoin remains excessively volatile to be advised for strategic investors’ portfolios, the cryptocurrency has the potential to outperform the majority of asset classes in the upcoming decade. In its 2027 “Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions” report, the bank noted that although the price volatility of the largest cryptocurrency has decreased, it is “premature to consider BTC as a diversifier in a balanced portfolio.”
JPMorgan, a leading global financial institution, has leveraged the foundational technology of Bitcoin – the blockchain – to launch its own suite of products. However, the CEO of the multinational, Jamie Dimon, has consistently expressed scepticism toward Bitcoin. “BTC currently lacks a clear role as a diversifier in balanced portfolios due to unstable correlations to other asset classes,” the report read. It added: “We see bitcoin as a speculative asset and a hedge against monetary easing.” The report presented a graph illustrating that the base case for bitcoin returns surpasses those of stocks, bonds, and gold.
However, it noted that the coin’s volatility could adversely affect its function within investment portfolios. “But should volatility continue to decline and correlations to other asset stabilize, this may evolve in the future, particularly as regulation becomes clearer and liquidity and price discovery continue to improve,” it noted. For now, the report added, bitcoin “mostly trades like a high beta risk asset that tracks global money supply growth.” Bitcoin has gained increased traction on Wall Street, particularly following the Securities and Exchange Commission’s approval of exchange-traded funds set to commence trading in 2024.
President Donald Trump’s pro-crypto stance has significantly influenced regulatory attitudes: under his leadership, regulators have adopted a notably more open approach to overseeing the sector since 2025. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has notably criticised Bitcoin, referring to it as a “hyper up fraud” and a “pet rock,” while asserting that its sole value lies in its appeal to criminals. He has expressed admiration for the coin’s underlying technology and has commended crypto products such as stablecoins.
